Three Sides to Every Story

Image
I received an e-mail yesterday from Mayor Miriam Holder. She did not feel that I was being fair in my assessment of her as the "Superintending Power" of the City of Lumberton. Well, I guess there are three sides to every story; there's my side, her side, and somewhere in the middle lies the truth. I may have become pejorative towards the Mayor of Lumberton, but I feel that I am within my rights to feel that way. However, I will accept her invitation to sit and conference with her to discuss her view of the issues at hand. I am eager to hear her side of the story.

Main Street Renovation

Image
Soon, Main Street will not be the same. Preparations are being made to rid the City of Lumberton of its' dilapaidated buildings. The demolition of several buildings was one of the topics discussed at the Special Called Meeting that was held March 19,2010. I had stopped attending the board meetings because our public officals seemed more iterested in serving themselves and not the public. But yesterday I saw a glimmer of hope for the City of Lumberton. I was throughly impressed how Alderman Timothy Johnson conducted himself during the meeting. He is truly an advocate for the residents of Ward 4, and the City of Lumberton. We are all fortunate to have a man of his vision, dedication, and integrity, willing to make the sacrifices that holding public office in Lumberton requires. I was also impressed with our Alderman at Large, Bobby Gibson. There were some that tried to throw Mr. Gibson under the bus but I was thought he handled himself with grace and dignity. Bob...

Special Called Meeting

There is a special called meeting today at City Hall. I will post later after returning from the meeting.

2010 Census

Image
Soon we will be receiving our census forms for 2010. Ten questions, ten minutes. We need to be counted. If you are not counted by the government, not only does your community lose money, you are more easily ignored and neglected. Political representation in the U.S. House of Representatives is determined by the census counts. Entrepreneurs determine where to locate businesses based on census data. Public policies and social programs are created based on census data. If you are not counted you are more likely to be ignored. Will you stand up and be counted?

Aunt Shirley: You Will Always Be In Our Hearts

Image
She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come. She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue. She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: “Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.” Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised. Give her the reward she has earned, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate. – Proverbs 31: 25-31 How did you find the energy, Aunt Shirley To do all the things you did, To be teacher, nurse and counselor To all of us, when we were just kids.. How did you do it all, Shirley, Be a chauffeur, cook and friend, Yet find time to be , hairdresser, caretaker, businesswoman, and playmate, I just can’t comprehend. I see now it was love That made you come whenever we'd call, Your inexhaustible love. And I thank you for it all. We Lo...

No Is Not Leadership

"Just saying no to everything may be good short-term politics, but it's not leadership," Obama said. "We were sent here to serve our citizens, not our ambitions. So let's show the American people that we can do it together." Truly, these are words that ALL elected officials should live by.

Lumberton Beer Sales

Image
The following article was taken from the Hattiesburg American. There is so much talk about the lack of revenue for the City of Lumberton. When will this city follow suit like other small municipalities in the State of Mississippi, and pass an ordinance for the sale of beer. IT CAME AS SOMETHING of a mild surprise that voters in Ellisville this week approved the legal sale of beer, going from a dry city to a wet city. It was the first time the town of almost 4,000 had supported a referendum to allow beer sales. A similar referendum in 1988 was rejected. Supporters believe allowing restaurants to sell beer will attract more name-brand restaurants to the town that's home to Jones County Junior College. That will mean more sales tax revenue for the city, they claim. Opponents say it will destroy Ellisville's small-town atmosphere and bring other alcohol-related problems. Starkville voters last month approved the sale of wine and liquor on Sundays. Tupelo recently approved the Su...
