Aunt Shirley: You Will Always Be In Our Hearts

Image
She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come. She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue. She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: “Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.” Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised. Give her the reward she has earned, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate. – Proverbs 31: 25-31 How did you find the energy, Aunt Shirley To do all the things you did, To be teacher, nurse and counselor To all of us, when we were just kids.. How did you do it all, Shirley, Be a chauffeur, cook and friend, Yet find time to be , hairdresser, caretaker, businesswoman, and playmate, I just can’t comprehend. I see now it was love That made you come whenever we'd call, Your inexhaustible love. And I thank you for it all. We Lo...

No Is Not Leadership

"Just saying no to everything may be good short-term politics, but it's not leadership," Obama said. "We were sent here to serve our citizens, not our ambitions. So let's show the American people that we can do it together." Truly, these are words that ALL elected officials should live by.

Lumberton Beer Sales

Image
The following article was taken from the Hattiesburg American. There is so much talk about the lack of revenue for the City of Lumberton. When will this city follow suit like other small municipalities in the State of Mississippi, and pass an ordinance for the sale of beer. IT CAME AS SOMETHING of a mild surprise that voters in Ellisville this week approved the legal sale of beer, going from a dry city to a wet city. It was the first time the town of almost 4,000 had supported a referendum to allow beer sales. A similar referendum in 1988 was rejected. Supporters believe allowing restaurants to sell beer will attract more name-brand restaurants to the town that's home to Jones County Junior College. That will mean more sales tax revenue for the city, they claim. Opponents say it will destroy Ellisville's small-town atmosphere and bring other alcohol-related problems. Starkville voters last month approved the sale of wine and liquor on Sundays. Tupelo recently approved the Su...

Water Under the Bridge

Image
In these dry times, every drop counts. The issue of water bills, water leaks, and the cost of leaks are always an issue with the City of Lumberton. Last night, there was concern about the loss of revenue from the water leaks at Frank Lee Homes. The previous adminsitration felt that the installation of water meters would help increase the revenue for the city, and justify their pay increase. When the issue of the water meters came before the board, there was oppositon to this measure, but those that were elected to represent the concerns of the residents of Frank Lee Homes did not consider our stance on the issue. We told the board that once the meters were installed, MRHA would not be culpable for the leaks, and the burden would fall on the tenants. Our concerns have been realized, and now the board is scrambling to find a way to address the issue. I informed the board of this possible issue, and I submitted a letter to the Lamar Times regarding this problem, but the measure to inst...

Not Much Has Changed

Image
It has been 50 years since the slaying of Mack Charles Parker in Poplarville, Mississippi. With the election President Barack Obamba, we thought that America was ready for change. Unfortnately, the City of Poplarville is not ready to engage in the change that is sweeping the rest of the country. They are still bogged down in the swamp of racism. In spite of hundreds of pages of FBI files where the men involved are clearly identified, and their meetings documented, and admissions of complicity verified, no one was ever charged, no one was ever indicted, no one ever was convicted of Parker’s murder. July 19, 2009, Randy Prince was allegedly shot and killed by Virgil Matthews. Matthews spent less than 24 hours in jail before the judge released him for lack of sufficient evidence. This decision echos the sentiment that was expressed 5o years ago in the murder of Mack Charles Parker; that the life of a black man does not matter. It it time for Poplarville to stop being known for these...

We Had Him by Maya Angelou

Beloveds, now we know that we know nothing, now that our bright and shining star can slip away from our fingertips like a puff of summer wind. Without notice, our dear love can escape our doting embrace. Sing our songs among the stars and walk our dances across the face of the moon. In the instant that Michael is gone, we know nothing. No clocks can tell time. No oceans can rush our tides with the abrupt absence of our treasure. Though we are many, each of us is achingly alone, piercingly alone. Only when we confess our confusion can we remember that he was a gift to us and we did have him. He came to us from the Creator, trailing creativity in abundance. Despite the anguish, his life was sheathed in mother love, family love, and survived and did more than that. He thrived with passion and compassion, humor and style. We had him whether we know who he was or did not know, he was ours and we were his. We had him, beautiful, delighting our eyes. His hat, aslant over his brow, and took a ...
