Domestic Violence Awareness Month

With much of the news of October surrounding the worthy cause of Breast Cancer Awareness month, many people fail to realize that the month also benefits another extremely worthy National cause. October is also National Domestic Violence Awareness month and it is important that we all do our part to raise awareness surrounding the problem. It is an issue that not only affects women and our teens but also a rising issue for men across the US. We must remember the aim of Domestic Violence Awareness Month is to recognize the achievements made in reducing domestic violence and to recommit to the work still to be done. Statistics show that 1 of 8 women will be diagnosed with some form of breast cancer while 1 in 4 women will experience some form of domestic violence in their lifetime; meaning women are more likely to be exposed to domestic violence than breast cancer. Most people don't know that October is also Domestic Violence Awareness Month and that the color of the ribbon is purple. The purpose of Domestic Violence Awareness Month is to make the community aware that domestic violence exists and that help is available for victims. If you are need assistance regarding domestic violence, you can call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1−800−799−SAFE (7233). Hotline advocates provide support and assistance to anyone involved in a domestic violence situation, including those in same-sex relationships, male survivors, those with disabilities and immigrant victims of domestic violence. All calls to the National Domestic Violence Hotline are anonymous and confidential.
