Repairs and Re-Districting
A troublesome portion of Highway 11 will be getting some needed repairs. Those traveling that portion of highway between Lumberton and Purvis will need to make adjustments to their travel route over the next few months. M-DOT is getting ready to start a road project on the Highway 11 underpass. John Walton Construction, based in Mobile, Alabama was awarded the contract Wednesday. A few months ago, Mayor Holder announced that the funding was available to make repairs and possibly expand the area, but they are still waiting for the railway company to approve the expansion. The crews are slated to address the drainage system that runs under the area, but there was no word on when the expansion of the area will begin.
In other news, Ben Winston, District 2 Supervisor, is fighting to have an independent corporation come into Lamar County to address the re-districting issues. 2011 census data showed that over the past 10 years the county has seen a 42% increase in population. Winston made a motion to consider hiring an outside law firm who the board consulted with earlier in the week but his motion was denied. Winston said, the census numbers show a large percent of minority residents reside in his district and a portion of district one. He feels the county could possibly create a majority-minority district. Before any final decisions are made, the board will hold a public meeting on April 4, to hear comments from residents.
When I saw Ben Winston on the news last night, I felt that this was the first time in his four years in office that he was actally leaving behind his self-serving mantra and trying to do something for the people of his district. I already made up my mind about not voting for Ben but last night made me re-think my stance. I know it was one glimpse into what's possible and the damage his "boys" (Tim and Bobby) have done here in Lumberton is still fresh on my mind, but I will have to weigh the difference and see if I would actually vote for Ben again. I know you can't go back and un-ring the bell and I will not be fooled again. I know Ben could have and still could do something to get his "boys" to stop tearing this city apart, but I will just wait and see if there are any changes and then will decide on the person I'm voting for.
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear about the work that's being completed and glad to see Ben Winston step up for something other than Paul's and Aaron's agenda. I read the blog and Jonathan always seem to add a certain color to his topics. I wonder why? But I also wonder why his peeps are never supportive of the things he has to say. Oh, I forgot, what's that old saying, if you want to hide something from a black person put it in writing. So I guess most of his peeps don't even know that this blog exist. I hope he lays of Hobson b/c he's not a threat to anyone. First of all, he beat up on white women, his best friend is a former cop with a crystal meth addiction and he has no where else to go. More than likely, this dumb group of aldermen will try their best to make him cheif, just for the hell of it. I know that was supposed to be a positive post, but I always go off subject when ever I get the opportunity.

ReplyDeleteI'll be so glad when you people stop playing the race card. Ben Winston has been doing what white guys wanted him to do for since he was elected and now he wants a majority minority district. Who's gonna fill that position? There is so much race baiting going on. Everytime something don't go your way does not mean it's racism. For instance, the issue with the boy making the racist joke at school. Why are you guys upset with Linda and Mason when Dennis, a black man, decided that nothing should be done to the student. Don't blame the parents, blame the principal. When Jonathan was allegedly threatened by the white officer nothing was done, but when Sharese allegedly threatened a white clerk, she was suspended for three days. I would like to go on record and say that three days off with pay is not punishment. But who made that decision. Yes, you got it, another black man. The cheif did nothing about Dennis threatening Jonathan, but out of fear, he suspendended Sharese because he know that two more black guys will side with Rebecca and Kent and vote to fire him. You have three black men serving on the board and for some reason the mayor can't get two people to support her efforts to make changes in Lumberton. Leonette left because of the pressure of dealing with the board, but now this board, for some reason, is ready to support a clerk that clearly not doing her job. Again, thanks to two black men. So stop acting like all of this is because of racism. Even Larry Strahan was able to get two people to support his every move, but that's what we do, we support one another, you people don't know the meaning of unity, but you know how to yell racism even when it's your people that got you stuck in the crab barrel
