Comm-UNITY
Today, the Lumberton School District hosted a Field Day Event at the Panther Stadium. The kids looked great in their various colors as they marched to their activities. It was especially refreshing to see all the people from all over the community come out and support this event. Field Day is an annual event in Lumberton, but Melinda Carli, branch manager of the Lumberton library, saw this as an opportunity to promote the Summer Reading Program. She presented her idea to the Mayor and Board of Aldermen and they gave her permission to close the street adjacent to the library. Chief Fortenberry and his dedicated group of officers were on hand to direct traffic and help the students and teachers across the street. Jerry Walters, Lumberton Fire Chief/EMT, was on hand with his dedicated crew of workers to assist in a number of ways. They did everything from help set up the tent to clearing spills in front of the refreshment table. Members of the Lumberton Friends of the Library was also there to hand out water, cookies, Gatorade and other refreshments to the students as they passed by the library. The Lumberton Friends of the Library is a mixed group of individuals--some were born and raised Lumberton and others moved here--but they all love the Lumberton library and they love the City of Lumberton. This was a fun and productive day and there was a great spirit of community. In addition to all of this unity, Flip and Brown, the one's moving into the old Fiorella's location, donated lunch for the volunteers. Today, we exhibited the sense of community that I knew existed in the City of Lumberton and I hope we don't have to wait another year for this type of camaraderie to happen again. Anyone interested in joining the Lumberton Friends of the Library or for information concerning the summer reading program should contact Melinda Carli at 601-796-4227.
