Above and Beyond--Derell McLemore

When I heard about the Lumberton Panthers getting their 2010 Championship rings, I sent out requests asking for photos of football players wearing their rings and Stephanie Martin, mother of Derell McLemore was the only one to respond to the request. So, today's feature story is about Derell McLemore. He's sporting the new championship ring that was presented to the Lumberton Panthers on Friday, May 13, 2011. The team has been given accolades for their accomplishments. The Lamar County Board of Supervisors also issued a proclamation to commemorate the 2010 winning season of the Lumberton Panthers. Derell plays corner back and was selected as MVP. Derell stated that he "appreciates the recognition, but the Lumberton Panthers are a team and everyone played their best to bring home another championship for the City of Lumberton." The game that led to a championship ring for the Lumberton Panthers was probably a deja vu moment for Rodney McLemore, Derell McLemore's father. Back in 1983,Rodney was an integral part of the championship team that defeated Calhoun City and gave Lumberton it's first State Championship win and in 2010, Derell was on the field facing Calhoun City for the title of State Champs. In addition to being a great football player, Derell excels in other sports as well. Recently, he was awarded trophies in the following sports: MVP for track and field and in the sport of basketball he was awarded the trophy for Best Hustle, Best Defense, and the Panther award. Derell McLemore is truly in a class by himself both on and off the field. Congratulations!

(If you have a child that you would like featured for their accomplishments, you can submit their picture and information to lumbertoninformer@yahoo.com with their name, position, and quote and I will be glad to include them in an upcoming blog.)

  1. In your last paragraph asking for the accomplishments of other children, you asked for their name, POSITION, picture and quote, insinuating that recognition was for athletic accomplishments only. How about those children with academic and non-athletic accomplishments such as STRINGS. Only when people recognize that the purpose of school is about academic achievment and that sports is a secondary privilege, not a "right". We need to be recognizing academics over sports. Try getting a job on your ability to dribble a basketball or throw a football or baseball vs making A's and B's. Our priorities are wrong!
