Mayehm on Main

The implementation of the Downtown Revitalization Grant is at a stand still because the individual that was contracted to demo the building on Main Street has not completed the work as planned. Now the City of Lumberton must find the resources to finish the part of the project that was supposed to be completed December 31, 2010. The man that took on the job of tearing down the buildings on Main Street basically gutted the building and took the supplies/material that he could sale and left the cavity of the buildings standing; which is a safety hazard as well as an eyesore. The guy that took on the job was not paid for his services, he stated that he just wanted to take on the job for the material. I guess the old saying is true: " You get what you pay for." The one thing that puzzles me about the contract this guy had with the City of Lumberton is the fact that our city attorney, Lindsey Carter, reviewed the contract. I am willing to bet that there was no provision in the contract that assessed a fine/fee to the individual if he didn't complete the work on schedule. Now, the City of Lumberton must take on another legal battle and try to recover some money if they decide to file a lawsuit against this individual, but will the lawsuit be in favor of the City of Lumberton, especially since our former lawyer reviewed the contract and didn't set a fine or require the individual to become bonded for the completion of the work. These are the types of questions that need to be asked before taking on a project, and unfortunately; the members of this city council are not willing to listen to the general public. I don't know why there are four members on the board that want to keep Carter on as an attorney; he has dropped the ball too many times and this mistake is going to cost the taxpayers even more money.
OAN: I can't wait to see the Publiic Works Fuelman account for the month of January. It seems there has been an excessive amount of driving since the departure of Public Works Director, Danny Davis. I am certain that they know their jobs, and it's possible that they are riding around to avoid being out in the cold, but can someone please let them know that Christams was in December and they can take the lights down on Main Street.
