Hit and Run: 911 Is A Joke in Our Town
Since the lackluster, Lumberton Police Department is not doing their job, maybe a reader of this blog will have some additional information. Last Monday, a student aged white male, driving either a silver or gray truck hit a pedestrian on Myrick Avenue. Mind you, it was a foggy day, but the fact that this person didn't stop is troubling and that's a hit and run. According to Black's Law, (a legal reference book)a hit-and-run is the act of causing (or contributing to) a traffic accident (such as colliding with a person or a fixture), and failing to stop and identify oneself afterwards. Well, this is what happened on Monday. An officer was called when this person made it home but the fact that there was not follow up and/or investigation is also troubling. I know Ward's has a two for one butter biscuit special and this officer was probably eager to eat but one would think that any offense, big or small, deserves investigation. I know the LPD is beating their chest because of their major/minor drug bust over the past weeks but why was there no interest in finding out the identity of a person that hit a pedestrian. It's sad that I feel that I have more investigative skills from watching CSI than the officers patrolling the streets of Lumberton. From the information I was told, the incident was witnessed by two other individuals. The bus that was directly behind the truck was on Myrick Avenue as well. For the record, only bus # 1 and #4 travel along Myrick. The truck that hit the pedestrain was headed towards the school. The person driving the truck looked like a school aged individual. The person was either going to Lumberton High School or Pearl River Community College. This could have been resolved if the officer would have went to the school to see if he could locate the truck. Today, I spoke with one of the individuals that witnessed this incident and I was told that no one came to the school to question any of the bus drivers. So, we have a group of people that are hip hip horraying that Hobson is no longer in office, but I would rather deal with a hot head than a Barney any day of the week. So, is this the type of service we're to expect during the reign of Elsie Fortenberry-Cowart? I think it's sad to have an serious incident taken so lightly. Thankfully, the person that was hit by this distracted driver was not seriously hurt but it could have been worse and the fact that it was not worthy of investigation by the Lumberton Police Department is very unsettling.
There are 4 buses that go down myrick.. 1,3,4 & 7
