There was a lot of news stories printed over the weekend. For instance, I found out that the Lamar County Board of Supervisors withdrew their financial support from Little Black Creek back in September of 2011, when Ben Winston was still on the board. In an article in the Hattiesburg American, it was revealed that the Pat Harrison Water District has enough money to keep the facility open, but they closed the waterpark in an effort to get enough citizens ensensed; hoping they would pressure the Lamar County Board of Supervisors into changing the decision that was made by the previous board members. Talk about cutting your nose to spite your face.
Also in the news this weekend was a letter that was submitted by a Petal teacher to the Hattiesburg American, "The cat that swallowed the canary 'PERS'. Brenda Daily outlined how the PERS (Public Employee Retirement System) is under attack and this attack is at the behest of the Republican Party. The Republicans have managed to sidetrack people by getting them to focus on non-issues like same-sex marriage and voter identification programs, but while you were voting in an effort to legislate morality, it seems that the PERS system (the retirement nest egg for Mississippians employed through the state) is about to be drained of it's yolk. According to Attorney General, Jim Hood, the only Democrat to win a state wide election in the latest Mississippi election, "employees acquire contractual rights at the time the employees join PERS, and that such rights may not be impaired ...". In her letter, Brenda Dailey went on to say On Feb. 17, the results of a State House of Representatives vote (offhandedly concerning the PERS program) were made available. Of 123 members voting, 59 voted "No" to allowing Hood to retain his powers. The "No" vote allows an outside attorney to be brought into the fight concerning PERS.
If his ability to serve for those public employees (not just teachers) connected to PERS is taken away, we may be in the cat's mouth, and the cat that swallowed the canary (59 members) continues to purr; or is it slurp?
