A Conversation with Ben: A New Beginning

Image
Early Saturday morning there was a knock at my door. Everyone that knows me know I don't like unannounced visitors. I hesitantly opened the door with a frown on my face so the unannounced visitor would know they disturbed my Saturday morning routine and that I didn't want to be bothered. Well, when I looked up, there was Ben Winston standing at my door. I held on to my frown as he greeted me but my frown softened after he said he needed to talk to me and ask for my forgiveness. I was actually shocked because I have spoken some hurtful but truthful things about Ben Winston the politician and pastor. At one point, I even questioned the motives of Ben Winston the person. I was already feeling rushed because I actually volunteered to work that day. I informed Ben that I couldn't talk with him at the moment but I could talk to him later in the day. He then said he would like it if my mother would join us in the conversation. I told him I would be able to talk t...

Know Your Status

I was online and I saw stories about the spike in HIV infections in Jackson and Hattiesburg, Mississippi. We're a mobile society and people from Lumberton and surrounding areas regularly visit and/or socialize in those cities. I know it's not new but many people don't have an issue with "hooking up". Today, it seems that a committed relationship is not a prerequisite for having sex. People are hooking up after games, at parties and even at church events and baded on the number of pregnancies, it's obvious that condoms are not part of the equation. I guess the wrap it up commercials are not very effective. I don't know what it's going to take for people to take precautions when having sex. I've had some bump and grind sessions that were legendary and I've handed out my share of pearl necklaces (the urban dictionary kind) but regardless of how explosive the sex may have been, it wasn't to die for; meaning we used condoms during intercourse...

It's Time to Man Up!

We have just entered the Spring season, and we are already having fights erupt all over the city. Yesterday, I stated the need for more police. Yes, we need more police patrolling the streets of Lumberton, but the addition of more police will not solve the problems that are plaguing the youth of our city. In order to see a change, we need more parents that are willing to perform their duties as a parent. Year after year, our youth are fighting like dogs. And most of the time, there are adults present; some adults are there video-taping the events. I'm sure there will be a DVD of the latest fights available for purchase. Dr. Michael Freeman has stated that "the strength of every nation is determined by the male population." Well, it is time for the adult males of Lumberton to Man Up, and set an example for the youth of our city. My father was not present in my life, but I am thankful that my uncle, "Jr. Brown" was there to teach me what I needed to k...
