Fast and Furious: Bobby Ducote

Image
A new season of the Discovery Channel’s “Street Outlaws” will premiere tonight and will feature Lumberton’s own, Bobby Ducote. Bobby’s need for speed has probably made him a target of the Lumberton Police Department but he has honed his skills and has landed on the Discovery Series: “Street Outlaws: New Orleans.” The series will feature some of the Southeast’s fastest racers as they form an underground street racing league. The show will follow the exploits of a driver named Kelly, who will defend his title from the driver’s seat of his racing machine called “The Shocker.” It is said that Kelly want to put The Big Easy on the street racing map but it is my belief that Bobby Ducote and his 1971 Maverick, affectionately named “Lil Legend” will put the City of Lumberton on the map and possibly bring more attention to the sleeper city by featuring a racer from the this area. It has been noted in a press release that this season of “Street Outlaws: New Orleans” will prove to be ...

Can the Panthers Weather the Raine-storm?

Image
This has been a long week and those that live in Lumberton have seen so much take place over the past few days. We have witnessed everything from political wrangling to protest to character assassinations. It is clear that this city is far from being a place of unity, but hopefully all of that will change tonight at Panther Stadium. Friday night football is one of the only avenues that have the ability to unite people. There are two main ways to socialize in Lumberton. No, make that three. There's church. There's football. Then there's the church of football—one faith in these parts on which most everyone can agree. Tonight, the Panthers are facing the Poplarville Hornets. A key player for the Hornets is running back Tyus Raine. It has been reported that Raine has scored over 20 touchdowns this season, and it seems that there's no stopping him. Tonight, all political affiliations are set aside and we become one town with one purpose and that is to win. We have a team of...

Superstar to Underdog to Inspiration

This is a story for anyone who has ever had a dream of a second chance, and anyone who has the guts to fight for what they really want! If you live close to Lumberton, Mississippi, then there is no doubt you have heard the name “Terry Grant.” Terry was a high school superstar from Lumberton in Football, Baseball, and track. In football, Terry came within 2 touchdowns of tying the Mississippi record for most touchdowns, finishing with 113 for his career. As a senior, he ran for 2,700 yards and scored 36 touchdowns. He was named Mississippi`s 2005 Mr. football. He was a member of the national honor society and graduated with honors. With a resume like this, Terry was highly recruited for College Football. He received a scholarship from Alabama University and quickly became a major part of the Crimson Tides offensive backfield. As a redshirt freshman in 2007, Terry was the teams leading rusher with 891 yards on 180 carries (4.95 yards per carry), both freshman records for runnin...

Above and Beyond--Derell McLemore

Image
When I heard about the Lumberton Panthers getting their 2010 Championship rings, I sent out requests asking for photos of football players wearing their rings and Stephanie Martin, mother of Derell McLemore was the only one to respond to the request. So, today's feature story is about Derell McLemore. He's sporting the new championship ring that was presented to the Lumberton Panthers on Friday, May 13, 2011. The team has been given accolades for their accomplishments. The Lamar County Board of Supervisors also issued a proclamation to commemorate the 2010 winning season of the Lumberton Panthers. Derell plays corner back and was selected as MVP. Derell stated that he "appreciates the recognition, but the Lumberton Panthers are a team and everyone played their best to bring home another championship for the City of Lumberton." The game that led to a championship ring for the Lumberton Panthers was probably a deja vu moment for Rodney McLemore, Derell McLemore's fa...

The Lumberton Panthers will head to Jackson this Friday to battle for the Class 2A State Title. The Panthers will face Calhoun City Wildcats who is seeking to clinch the state champs title. The Wildcats have participated in eight games at the state level and they have only won one state championship game, but the Lumberton Panthers have won every state championship game they played. For those sports historians, you may remember that Lumberton Panthers defeated Calhoun City 27-14 back in 1983 which was the first championship game for both teams. The state championship game for the 2A division will begin at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 3 at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium. The game will be televised on PBS. Tickets for the game can be purchased in advance at Lumberton High School for $12. Tickets at the stadium will be $13. All Lumberton Panther supporters should purchase their tickets in advance because the school gets to keep half of the money from its ticket sales.
