2,500

Once the 2010 Census is completed, if there are 2,500 people living in Lumberton, we can get a petition started to change the status of this city. We will have the opportunity to vote on the sale of beer and light wine. Now, people may say that they don't want people drinking beer in their city. Well, if you would drive around Lumberton on garbage day, you will see that beer is being heavily consummed in the City of Lumberton, we're just not benefiting from the sales of beer. I checked the records in Forrest County, and the store we know as "The County Line" paid over $350,000 in sales taxes during the last fiscal quarter to Forrest County. That's just one quarter, and the revenue from the sales is going to Forrest County, but we all know that most of the customers visitng this establishment are from Lumberton. So, before making a rush judgement about what you don't want in your city, ask yourself, do you want the revenue, do you want more jobs, and more resturants. Beer and wine are a recession-proof commodity. As a matter of fact, people tend to drink more during a recession.

Comments

  1. We already have enough drunks in Lumberton why make it easier to obtain their commodity. Increasing access will result in increased crime, increased accidents, increased abuse. Money isn't everything, especially when it only goes into a certain few pockets. I like the fact that I can take my child into a gas station and him not be mesmerized by the flashy bright advertisements attempting to make an impression on his young brain that alcohol is cool and the thing to do. Advertisements try to paint a picture of a sexy woman or man next to this product, or a beautiful beach scene in attempts to say if you drink this you will have a life like this. Why not advertise the truth? It probably would not sell the product if you advertised the truth. It would look more like a middle aged, filthy, over weight, rotten tooth, unemployed man or woman probably still living with their parents, manipulating the system to have medicaid as their insurance plan and receiving a check each month for some excuse that they were able to convince the government for which they could not work when in reality if they just sobered up they could be a productive member of society. Just because it is legal and yes a lot of citizens in Lumberton do go to whatever extreme to obtain their life substaining substances does not mean that there aren't still a few God fearing individual's that do not want our children exposed to open consumption and ease of obtaining alcohol at our local gas station. It is one of the great benefits of living in a small community. It allows those parents who care about what their children are exposed to and examples that are being set. If you want revenue why not open a treatment center? Lumberton can either be part of a larger problem which is this fallen world or it can be part of the solution and not fall into the misconception that it is okay because everyone else does it. Lead by example Lumberton. Do you just want your children to do it because Jack and Mary do it or do you want to teach them to stand for what is right no matter what false promises are dangled in front of them in attempts to persuade a wrong decision. Money is the root of all evil. So what kind of example are you wanting to set as the citizens of Lumberton? What are you reasons for voting to allow the sale of alcohol? Money, reputation, or just cause every other town is doing it?

  2. In response to previous comment, it is not a bad thing to sale beer or wine in city limits, I agree that it will give our young kids a view that is all good but what do you think they see when they see Uncle John drunk and Aunt Sue high. We try and protect our kids from alot of stuff and some of it is an everyday occurance. It is true that the line is being paid dearly by the residents of Lumberton and yes we need this money. It is not the duty of the City to teach our kids about alcohol it is your duty as a parent, so if you teach your kids while they are young about things they will grow up to make there own decisions about it. It is not the responsibilty of the town to teach your kids, if you tell them the truth when they ask you a question than you want have to worry about outside forces influcening them because they can come to you and ask. God fearing has nothing to do with beer or light wine I know of preachers that have a glass of wine or drink a beer on occasions so don't bring God into it. There was wine at the Last Supper. Beer or light wine is not what make a person non productive in our town it is the back water ignorance of there up bringing. Laziness breeds laziness, sorriness breeds sorriness, ignorance breeds ignorance until one day someone comes along and teach them better. Our kids learn alot from the things we teach them we just dont know we are the teacher of it. They dont do what Jack and Mary do, they do what Mom and Dad do when we think they are not looking. Money is not the root of all evil "Stupid people with stupid views is the root of all evil because they are always looking at what or how this will benifit them. Selling beer or light wine want corrupt this town anymore than what it is, I have lived here for 30 years and it is time for a change. Read you statitics we have more crime and accidents from towns that dont sell beer or wine because they have to sneak and do it. Just to let you know I dont drink because my mother taught me about it when I was young, she explained the pro that people think and the true cons about it, nor do I smoke and grew up two blocks from a liquor store.

  3. In response to the other two comments. First of all selling beer and wine with in city limits will not make it easier for drunks to drink cause if you havent noticed they are going to do it anyway. They will just take there money out of Lumberton and get it. All the signs the say stay and shop in Lumberton are of no use when there is nothing to be bought here. Lumberton is what we younger people consider "LAME." It has nothing. There are no clothing stores, there is no form of entertainment for younger people, NOTHING. Lumberton is a waistland. The sell of beer will allow for more businesses to come in and then maybe bring more people in. It does not give children a negative view of society. It shows them the reality of the real world. If you are a good parent and teaches your child right from wrong your child will know its not healthy to drink excessively."A WISE PERSON LEARNS FROM THE MISTAKES OF OTHERS, A FOOL LEARNS FROM THEIR OWN MISTAKES."

  4. In my opinion, the town is hurting for business, jobs, and all around money. Heck, there is a big sign in the middle of town saying "STAY HERE AND SPEND". Hello people, why not increase the towns economy instead of argue about what's already been going on for years from the County Line. Quit talking about it and actually do something please.
