Paper Cuts and Pay Raises

The Lumberton Board of Aldermen just voted to give Susan Guidry a raise of $1.25 which will give her bring her hourly earnings up from $7.25 to $8.50. Susan's pay was cut along with the other city employees due to budget constraints, but there has been a change in the thinking of our board members and they decided that Susan Guidry deserved an increase in pay, despite the fact that the financial situation of the City of Lumbeton remains the same. Now keep in mind that none of the other city employees have been restored to their regular rate of pay, but they found it necessary to give Susan Guidry a raise because "she is struggling financially." Who isn't? Just last week, we lost our deputy court clerk because the Board of Aldermen refused to keep her at her regular rate of pay and even with the cut in pay, Melissa asked to given a 40 hour work week and they refused that request as well.
We have police officers risking their lives and the Board of Aldermen have not met to resore their rate of pay, but they find it necessary to restore Sue's pay. I guess it's quite dangerous navigating around those staple machines, cash registers and lets not forget about those deadly paper cuts. But it's apparent that Kent "Triple K" Crider had to call in some favors because this same board voted against Susan Guidry's pay increase just last week, but they've suddenly had a change of heart or they were reminded of the votes they made in the past. Whatever the case may be, they are selectively restoring pay raises to "certain" employees. There were some in attendance that wanted to know what was meant by discretion of the city clerk. It means that Susan Guidry will be working 40 every week, that's what it means. I thought it was going to be a quiet week, but our Board of Aldermen gave us some additional news. Apparently, working in the city clerk's office is a recession proof position for those with the complexion for the connection.
