Lumberton Hot Topics

There are several topics that have been sitting in my inbox for a while. Instead of posting several small posts, I would take this time to address them all at once. They range from the food pantry to issues with the park and the fact that elected officials love to overstep their bounds. First, let me address the food pantry gossip. There has been a lot of talk about the food pantry that had been established for Lamar County. The distribution site is located at Rogers Learning Center. The program is free and it offer food to individuals that qualify based on their household income. I went over to see the operation and it seems to be running efficiently; despite the low number of volunteers. The program rely on voluteerism and donations in order to remain viable. There was a rumor circulating that people were being charged for their food boxes and that is not true. There is a donation bottle in place at the facility and all monies collected are used for gas, packages and other essential items. The donations are voluntary and no one is being forced to pay in order to receive the food boxes. The program was started to help the residents of Lamar County and it seems that a lot of gossip and backbiting could lead to the closure of the food pantry. If you have any questions about the program or would like to volunteer, you may contact Rogers Learning Center at 601-796-3990 for more information. Another matter that has been brought to my attention was the implementation of a noise ordinance during Easter weekend. I told the individuals that I would look into the matter and find out what was going on. I was contacted by several citizens that told me they were threatened with a $600 fine if they did not shut down the gatherings at their homes and disburse. I told them I was not sure if they could be charged for a noise ordinance violation or if they would be charged with disturbance of the peace. From my understanding, I thought the noise ordinance was for those playing excessively loud music in their cars. I thought disturbance of the peace would be something applied to those having gatherings at their homes and that it depended on a complaint being filed. As I stated, I am not certain but I will research this matter a little more in order to get some clarity. There was also talk of individuals being asked what was in their cups. I know this is a dry county and the people were attempting to be respectful by having their drinks of choice in a cup and not taking swigs from the bottles. I don't know the full story and I have yet to speak with the chief, but there are those that feel they are being harassed and these sort of measures take place every year on Easter. From what I was told, the day in the park was a success and everyone had a good time. The only complaint I heard about the day in the park was there was an opportunistic individual there that was charging children $5 to take a photo with the Easter bunny. I was told that this person was trying to establish a party service business and was using this day to promote her business, but the fact that she managed to upset several children by refusing to let them take a photo with the person in the Easter bunny costume, may have caused her potential clients to give her the side eye when considering booking her for their event. But it seem that she may have corrected the matter or was actually hired for another event because at a day in the park event sponsored by the men of Envirochem, there were several costume characters at the event and I saw a number of photos with Dora the Explorer, Hello Kitty! and Spider Man. Now, that brings me to the next set of messages I received. It seems that in the midst of a good time, Alderman Tommy Dukes, took it upon himself to try and shut down the event because he did not recall giving permission for them to host the event at a public park. From what I gathered, the event was fun, the kids (and adults) were enjoying themselves, there was plenty of food and drinks for everyone, the kids were playing games and using the jumpers. No one was fighting or arguing. There was a group of hardworking men that wanted to give back to their community and as usual, there's someone with control issues that want to shut it down. Maybe they should have hired him to cook for them and he wouldn't have been upset. Honestly, I don't know why he had a problem with a peaceful gathering at a public park. Was the park full of litter? No. Was there people doing doughnuts in the park with their four wheelers? No. There were no fights or arguments. Just pure fun for everyone that attended. But that is why Lumberton is always getting a bad rep. The people try to do something productive and the elected officials want to micro-manage everything. The LPD have patrol officers on the streets all day and night. If there was a problem, I am certain they would have been called to the scene. It's time for board members to focus on the bringing fiscal activity to this city and stop focusing on trying to deter others from giving back to their community. Hopefully, the men of Envirochem will continue giving back to the community and this will inspire others to host a day in the park as well. I think they did a wonderful job and I think the LPD hosted a wonderful event as well. We need more events like this and less political obtrusion.

  1. I gotta say I was at all the events over the weekend and not one police officer confronted us. You are a liar and a sad little man. You live for free off the government but complain about the working people. So sad.
