The Mayoral Candidates (Winston vs. Holder)

Election day is rapidly approaching. Listed below are comments made by the mayoral candiates for the City of Lumberton. Mayor Miriam R. Holder addressed the crowd and she gave her platform that Experience Makes A Difference. Mayor Holder outlined three top issues as economic development, establishing recreational/educational facitlities for our youth and joining the Let's Play state health challenge. Mayor Holder listed a few of her accomplishments while serving as mayor. Holder said we finally have a fair contract with the Gold Coast Skydivers. Holder worked tirelessly on getting the $1,000,000 Main Street Renovation Grant passed and completed. Holder also worled to secure the contract for Azalea Gardens, a senior living facility. Azalea Gardens is a $9.6 million dollar gated, senior living facility and it will include medical staff as well as security. Holder was also instrumental in securing the FAA AIP grants for the Lumberton airport. Holder called on her connections in the Department of Justice to help Lumberton get their districts rezoned, free of charge. Holder said there is much more work that needs to be done. She would like to have the streets repaired. Holder said the City of Lumberton has secured a $400,000 grant to repair the sewer system for Love's Addition. Mayor Holder said she would love to re-instate the Lumberton Planing and Zoning Committee in an effort to attract new business. When asked why she would like run again, Mayor Holder said she has a love for the City of Lumberton and she want a better Lumberton for her grandchildren and great grand child. Mayor Holder closed her address with a quote from John C. Maxwell. "People don't care about how much you know until they know how much you care." After Mayor Holder addressed the audience, Ben Winston, Pastor of Sweet Beulah Baptist Church and former Lamar County Supervisor, District 2, approached the podium. His approach was a little differnt. In his hand was a Instuction Manual from Chevron. Winston touted that he was supernaturally empowered and that was the reason why a black man, raised in Mississippi by a grandmother that could not read or count, was selected to help compile a employee handbook for a multi billion dollar corporation. Winston also went on to say that everything he touches grows and is still standing. Winston said he was the best supervisor to ever serve in the State of Mississippi and he even went into this own finances to pay over $1,750 in insurance premiums for the Lumberton Volunteer Fire Department so they would not lose their coverage. Winston also said there are people that are waiting for him to get elected to invest in the City of Lumberton. Winston said there has not been a board that worked with the mayor since Bobby Garraway left office. Now, this was a interesting since Winston once served as an alderman. So, I guess he was saying that he was not even willing to work with the mayor when he was in office, but he did, however, encourage voters to put a board in place that would work with the mayor. In essence, this board refused to work with Mayor Holder; therefore they should not be re-elected or he's saying re-elect the board that's in place as long as you vote for him as mayor. If you're confused, well, join the gang, because I was confused also. Now that I've posted the review, let me give you my commentary. From what was said, Mayor Holder has a track record of working for the City of Lumberton. Mayor Holder put her time and freedom on the line in the quest to have accountability at city hall. Although she was threatened with jail time for her fight for accoutability, she did not waver because she want what is best for Lumberton. She is certified as well as qualifed to serve as mayor. Mayor Holder has always demanded the best for Lumberton and I think she will continue to do so. This is a pivotal election for the City of Lumberton and I hope people will make the best choice instead of relying on personal preferences. I would think that anyone that loved their city would not need to be in office before encouraging others to invest in their hometown; especially if they LOVE this city. I am praying that the people of Lumberton realize the seriousness of this election and pray for increase in the City of Lumberton. Govern yourselves accordingly, and I will do the same.
