You Can't Fix Stupid With Duct Tape
The City of Lumberton is the epicenter for stupidity. At the regular board meeting there was an agenda item to override the mayoral veto to hire Laci Lawler as deputy clerk. Since the mayor was ill, there was not enough votes to override the mayor's veto. Naturally, you would think that the board would put a period and move on to something else; not this board. After realizing that they wouldn't have the votes to override the mayor's veto until she returned, the city clerk devised a clever plan for the dumb and dumber crew so they can avoid the law and hire Laci anyway. Our city clerk put the motion to hire Laci Lawler back on the agenda, but this time she had her down at a pay rate of $8.50/hour instead of $7.25/hour. She said that she talked with someone at the attorney generals office and they said that it was legal and that she would present an "official" opinion from the attorney general's office to support her claim that the board can avoid state law by re-wording the agenda item. I'm hoping that Alderman Rogers would send this information to the attorney generals office for an official opinion because I don't think one will ever come from the clerk's office. If there's an "official" opinion that supports her statement, why wasn't it printed out and presented to the board before they voted on hiring Laci as deputy clerk. I'm certain that no such opinion exist and we will never see any official opinion to support the city clerk's claim that it's legal to re-word an agenda item in order to avoid legally overriding a mayoral veto. But stop the presses, and call our congressmen and senators. For years, they have been wasting taxpayers money by holding special sessions in an attempt to override vetoes. Why didn't they know about the law that give them the authority to just change the wording of an agenda item and avoid the veto altogether? This is such a revelation. Imagine how much money this would save our state as well as our country. Instead of coming down on our city clerk, we should rally behind her and get her to present this obviously obscure law to our lawmakers. I'm telling you, this would save our country millions of dollars; there wouldn't be a need to hold special sessions, and anytime something is vetoed, we can just change the wording and pass it again without going through the legality of having a 2/3's vote. Of course I was being sarcastic, but if you believe that you can change the wording of an agenda item instead of overriding a veto, you are dumb enough to serve as an elected official in the City of Lumberton.
