There's talk around town that there is more than one person that wants to step into the role of Lumberton's next cheif of police. I talked with one person and he said he didn't have any desire to become chief, and that he was more than happy to work under the guidance of Interim Chief Cowart. I don't know if Lumberton is conducting a search for a new chief, but it would be best for them to promote from within; that way they will have an officer that's familar with the residents of Lumberton. One thing's for certain, whoever takes over as chief must learn to be consistent. This past Friday and Saturday, the officers on duty had the streets on lock-down. One officer simply parked at the entrace of Frank Lee Homes and almost immediately, you could hear crickets chirpping. For some reason, the loud music ceased, no one was standing on the corner, driver's were actually obeying the speed limit and using their signals to indicate they were turning and people actually stopped at the stop signs. Intersting! But Sunday night, from 6:00 p.m.--8:00 p.m. it was a completely differnt story. There were drivers on the street doing all types of tricks, speeding, blasting their window-shaking loud music, people driving around drinking and throwing their cups/cans out of their car windows. One thing about the LPD is that they're not consistent. If we have officers on duty one weekend that runs everyone off the corner and then the next weekend, there are officers on duty that will just look at the crowd of people hanging out around a sign that states "No loitering/police enforced." This accomplishes nothing. I've spoken in the past about the police partoling Myrick Avenue more than Main Main Street, but after witnessing the antics and the lack of self-respect that was on full display this weekend, I truly believe that there are some people that need constant monitoring from the police department. If you don't beleive me, then get up early Saturday, Sunday and Monday morning and drive along Main Street and then continue along Myrick Avenue and North 10th Street and notice that Main Street is void of trash and paper in the streets whereas Myrick/North 10th Street looks like the after math of a Mardi Gras parade. When people loiter, they litter. Every weekend, every stereotype you could possible imagine about a black people is on full display in Ward 3 and for that reason, the police department must tighten the reigns on that area because, for some reason, they don't seem to have there wherewithal to govern themselves accordingly. So, if the next cheif can't seperate their personal affiliations from their professional responsiblity, then Houston we're gonna have a problem.
