Since I'm accused of spoon-feeding the readers of this blog, I thought I would add a little humor into the post this morning. It seems the Jail-Bail event was successful; it was even featured on WDAM. Kudos to Chief Cowart for difussing the situation that was brewing over the weekend. Friday, there was an uproar about someone's facebook page. People were walking back and forth saying they were going to continue pacing because they didn't want to miss the fight. People were about to catch a heat stroke but that didn't matter because they wanted to see someone get assaulted. Thankfully, Cowart beefed up patrol in the area, and the whole situation became much ado about nothing. Despite one humorous tussel between two women, it was relatively quiet this weekend. I don't know if the decrease in disturbances was the result of black beach or increased patrol, but whatever the case, it was a welcomed, peaceful, weekend. The other day, there was a comment, which has been removed, about Officer Parker. I don't know why the comment was made or the intent of the comment, but it seems that Parker is an asset to the LPD. I don't know why people are so upset when a local person gets the opportunity to work in the community they call home. Lately, there have been individuals that feel that residents of Lumberton don't "care" enough and they use that as an excuse to hire outside the city limits. I think it admirable that someone from Lumberton is willing to deal with the scrutiny of policing people they've known all of their life. I can't imagine what goes through the mind of a police officer; even in a town as small as Lumberton, but they are faced with many dangers each and every day. I know some of the comments seem to be specifically geared toward the police department, but that was not my intent. There are all types of people reading these posts and sometimes, the intent of the post is missed because so much focus is placed on the comments, but it is what it is. There are those that may have been hurt by the comments, but then those that come to their defense are just as guilty because they make hurtful comments as well, but since their comment is supposed to be in defense of the person that was supposedly wronged, it's apparently okay, at least in the minds of the GCB's. This city has been through a fire storm when it comes to the police department. If we can sit back and think everything's peaches and cream when people like Hobson are in control, then we shouldn't be so critical when we have an interim chief that knows the administrative as well as the community aspects of being a police officer. We (I) need to be more supportive of our officers and our interim chief.
