Day in the Park 2012

That's right, the Day in the Park is back on. The board granted permission to the Brothers of the Struggle to host a softball tournament at the 5th Avenue Park on Easter Sunday. The group is hosting the softball tournament in an effort to raise money for the KeKe B Foundation. But he permission was granted with stipulations. For the first time in Lumberton's history, the police department is sponsoring an Easter Egg hunt at the park on Sunday, April 8, 2012. There will be NO TOLERANCE for disruptive behavior, littering and smoking is banned because the City of Lumberton is Tobacco Free and the park is owned by the City of Lumberton. No cups will be allowed while at the park. That means, no red cups, clear cups, Pimp cups, communion cups or sippy cups. Sodas and bottled water are the only beverages allowed, NO EXCEPTIONS. Again, no smoking of any sorts is allowed. This is an opportunity that will determine is this type of event will ever be allowed to take place at 5th Avenue Park. So, if you want to continue having Day in the Park, then I suggest you govern yourselves accordingly. Just a note, the cylindrical objects with the plastic liners hanging out of them are trash cans; the place to put items you are no longer using. I know that the people attending this event are used to dropping their empty bottles, cans, paper plates, chicken boxes, etc. on the ground (I guess it's difficult for a person that can't pick up his pants to pick up their trash) but try and pretend you have some sense of pride. But in the long run, the success or mess of this event will reflect on the Brother of the Struggle and like I said, it will also determine if this type of event will be welcomed in the future. Also, this is the time where we will see if Interim Chief Elsie Cowart is ready to permanetely take over the helm of the LPD. This weekend is going to show what she's made of. Now there are a lot of people attending this event that are supportive of Cowart, but I'm concered that those same people are going to expect preferential treatment. For the most part, her supporters are non-voters and when they hear that the polls are open they think they've missed the opening of a new strip club. But for this weekend, she's going to have to put her big girl panties on and run her department. She's responsible for the department, not Bobby Gibson. If Gibson is so intersted in running a police department he needs to get an application and attend the police academy this fall. But for this long weekend, Cowart is going to need to use over-time, comp-time and volunteer time to man the streets of Lumberton because they're going to party all weekend long and idiots love to be seen. I'm interested to see how the LPD is going to deal with the four-wheelers, the drag racing, the wilding out, ect. I'm hoping for the best, but I hope the LPD is preparing for the worst. Hopefully, the weekend will be fun-filled and drama-free, but this is Lumberton.
