LPD Gets Another Motorcycle

The City of Lumberton has acquired another motorcycle for the police department. Compared to other non-enterprise departments, the budget for the Lumberton Police Department is gianormous. But the purchase of the motorcycle is an effort to cut down on the amount of fuel that is being used by in the police cars. The cost for the motorcycle was less that $4,000 and it will be used whenever the weather permits. These motorcycles are perfect around town. They are lightweight, they'll do over 60 miles per hour, and they get close to 100 miles per gallon! If used properly, they may be exactly what the Lumberton police department needs to get expenses down and community relations up. Now, for the other side of the coin. In order to operate a motorcycle in the State of Mississippi requires a motorcycle endorsement on your regular Class R driver's license. To receive this endorsement, you must be at least 17 years old and you must take two tests: the written and the riding tests. Do these officers have a motorcycle endorsement on their license? There are additional steps for operating a motorcycle when you're a police officer. A motorcycle cop must complete a basic motor officer certification course to learn police motorcycle riding concepts and techniques that will later be used in the field. Candidates receive classroom and practical field training that will allow them to operate a police motorcycle expertly and safely in confined spaces and over a variety of courses and conditions that simulate actual motorcycle patrol conditions. After completion of the basic training course, new motorcycle cops generally are assigned to ride in tandem with an experienced motorcycle officer for a period of time before being allowed to ride alone. But that's not the case in the City of Lumberton. When you have a douche for a chief, he just asks the board to order another motorcycle and put the officer out on the road with not training or certification. Just the other week, there was a news story about motorcycle cops attending a training course in Gulfport, Mississippi. They attended R.I.D.E. (Riders Institute for Defensive Education). Since all of their training classes are held on Saturday and Sunday, maybe Hobson will actually comply with the law and send those officers to Gulfport for their training. Their number is (228) 697-6686.

  1. Since police records, applications, files and driver's license are not public record, why don't you ask Mayor Holder to check and see if the officers using the motorcyles have a motorcycle endorsement and if they are certified to operate a motorcycle. She can check with Chand Young to find out the requirements. After he left the Lumberton Police Department, he became a motorcycle cop in Hattiesburg. Wyles is another officer that became a motorcycle cop after leaving Lumberton. Hopefully, she can get you the answers. But my biggest concern is why didn't the cheif make sure they had this certification before getting the city to buy another motorcycle? He's either dumb or don't care about breaking the law; but I feel that it's really a combination of both.

  2. You said the motorcycle will help cut down on gas usage, but what about all the overtime the police department is getting? What are they doing to cut down the amount of money they're spending on overtime?

  3. Jonathan, I guess you're going to have to be the mature one in this matter. We know that Hobson is not equipped to run a department and his days are numbered. I think it's time for you two to sit and talk so that all of this negative energy can be resolved. I know he might not be able to comprehend much of what you have to say, but you should make an effort. And what's with all of these new officers being brought in and never presented to the board. Why does this city have a problem with doing a background check?

  4. I see that we just got a new motorcycle,, the question is, how many of the supposed to wanna be cops have license to drive it.

P.S. tell the chief he needs to slow his ass down in the school zone before Bobby Gibson has to fire him.

  5. On to a different subject, I want to know WTF is going on at the High School with all these kids and teachers. There is more drugs being sold on school campus than the whole town, the kids are being told about drug test so that can pass them and even if they don't pass them they get fixed. They are being allowed to stay at school after jumping on other kids and sending them to the hospital because they are on the first string of the football team. Favortism is a BIT**. I guess it pays to know people in somewhat useful places. This is not right and someone needs to start investigating this school. It looks like the old drug ring that happened about 20 years ago is back in business.
Would like to meet with you, but will need for this to remain anonymous because I have children at this school.

  9. Just how many laws did he break to get him here. Guess now we know who the kids are taking after. They follow adults. I guess since he helping coach they will learn a lot faster. Tell him since he got the chief out of the spousal abuse charge, is he going to be able to get him off a manslaughter by vehicle charge too.

  10. Bobby Gibson has no business around anyones children. Who is the idiot that is allowing him to be on the sidelines at Lumberton's games? I know he betta not be on the field when my son get to high school or else it's gonna be some smoke in the city.

  11. When the people we hire to enforce the law does not abide by those laws, then there is no law.

  12. I'm not sure what the "cheifs" big emergency was yesterday but he needs to either slow down around the school area or find himself another route to take.. I know he wasted about $5.00 of gas when he passed by me with a heavy foot on the pedal....Im talking about stop sign to stop sign.. come on now
